It’s crucial that we keep the Register up to date, so that people can use it to know whether they’re working with an appropriately qualified professional. In total, over 42,000 of you have paid your 2021 fees on time, meaning there are now more architects on the Register than ever before. This reflects the significant increase we have seen with regards to both UK and EU applications to join the UK profession.

This year, recognising the impact of Covid-19 on the sector and the economy, we issued additional reminders to ensure architects were aware of the fee deadline and ways to pay.  Fewer than 1000 individuals have had their details removed from the Register, accounting for 2% of the profession at the end of 2020.  Around one third of those removed had joined the Register without a prescribed UK qualification. By comparison, 1,132 – or 3% of architects – were removed from the Register for non-payment last year. We also received 627 resignations during 2020. This figure has remained steady in recent years, with 631 resignations received in the last registration period.

We have now concluded the 2021 fee collection and are about to inform those who have been removed for non-payment. Under the Architects Act we are required to remove from the Register the names and details of any architects who have not paid their fee.  Letters will be sent in the next week.  It is no longer possible to pay the 2021 fee, and anyone wishing to return to the Register must now apply for reinstatement.

An application with the necessary fee must be completed before you can be put back on to the Register.

Please remember that while your name does not appear in the Register, you must be careful not to use the title ‘architect’ in the course of your work. To do so would be in breach of Section 20(1) of the Architects Act 1997.
