Back in September we explained our Board would be moving to a new structure in 2019 where all members would be appointed by the Privy Council and the Board will consist of eleven members in total, made up of:

  • One lay, non-executive Chair
  • Ten non-executive Board members (five architect and five lay members of the public)

The decision to change the constitution of our Board came about in 2017 following a review of the regulation of architects and a desire to ensure our governance more closely reflects Government’s preferred relationship with arms’ length bodies and current practices of regulatory bodies.

Our sponsoring department, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MCHLG) oversaw the recruitment process for the new Board and the appointments were made by the Privy Council. There was a good response to the recruitment campaign and over 130 applications were received as part of the process.

We are delighted to confirm our new Board are now in place and that their first official Board meeting took place on 1 April 2019.

Alison White (Chair)

John Beckerleg Mark Bottomley (architect)
Derek Bray Will Freeman (architect)
Emeritus Professor ADH Crook Elena Marco (architect)
Liz Male Stephen McCusker (architect)
Suzanne McCarthy Richard Parnaby (architect)

Through their leadership, ARB Board members are responsible for maintaining the public’s trust and confidence in the integrity of both of the architects’ profession and ARB. Our new Board brings valuable skills and experience that will assist us in protecting the public and supporting architects through regulation.

Our new Board includes two members from our previous Board, Richard Parnaby and Suzanne McCarthy. To avoid a significant number of Board members changing at one time going forward, Board members, including the Chair, have been appointed for varying tenures of either two, three or four years. All Board members are eligible for re-appointment for a total period of up to eight years subject to satisfactory performance.
