Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy and in the face of a global climate emergency, fire safety and sustainability have become particularly important in the built environment sector. In a survey we ran last year, these were the two key issues that architects told us were increasingly important in their work.

As regulator, it’s our job to make sure we continue to protect the public by ensuring everyone admitted to the Register has the necessary skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours. We do this by setting criteria and processes that education providers must meet for their students to be able to join the Register and practise in the UK.

To ensure that architects of the future are equipped to manage the demands society faces in the coming years, we are proposing new guidance for education providers. It aims to improve the consistency of standards across all institutions offering ARB recognised qualifications, so that architecture students are adequately trained to be able to design safe and sustainable buildings.

Before we issue this guidance, we want to hear your thoughts on it. For more information, and to view the guidance, please click here.  Those seeking to contribute to the consultation should do so by midday on Friday 23 April 2021.

We also encourage you to keep an eye out for our professional guidelines for architects on fire and life safety and sustainability, which will be published later this spring.
