On Tuesday 30 November, ARB hosted its first Developing Competencies for Tomorrow’s Architect event. This event series, inspired by Modernising the initial education and training of architects, has been an opportunity for ARB to discuss our proposals for modernising architectural education and training with architects and other key stakeholders. We’re also using the events to discuss certain key competency areas for architects, and we might enshrine them in any new system.

A recording of the first session is available to watch through this link. It features a keynote address from Professor Elena Marco, Head of Department, Architecture and the Built Environment, UWE Bristol and ARB Board Member, along with insights and opinions from

  • Tom Bell, (Architect, Ridge & Partners and Chair RIBA Wessex)
  • Simon Howard (Director of Regulation, ARB)
  • Shankari Raj (Architect, Director of Nudge, Senior Lecturer, 2020 AJ 40 under 40 winner, Head of Education at Design West)

The second session takes place at The City Centre, London, Thursday 9 December at 4:30pm, and will focus on the competency area of ‘professionalism and ethical behaviours’. Dr Teri Okoro, Director of TOCA Architects and ARB Board Member, will give the keynote address, with contributions also coming from

  • Siu-Pei Choi (Architect, Senior Design Manager at Wates Residential, and member of FAME network)
  • Neal Shasore, (Head of School, The London School of Architecture)
  • Hugh Simpson (Chief Executive and Registrar, ARB)
